This easy pita pizza is the fastest, easiest pizza you’ll ever make. It’s tasty, Weight Watcher’s-friendly, and keeps you full through to your next meal.

I realize that pizza made on pita bread is not a new concept. I’m sure many of you have tried it, especially if you have kids. But this one is a little different than most because instead of regular cheese, it uses cottage cheese. And I’m here to tell you, it’s delicious!

Can You Use Pita Bread As A Pizza Base?

Absolutely! Hence, the name “Pita Pizza”! In fact, pita bread makes wonderful pizza, and you don’t have to knead dough or pre-bake anything. Just put your toppings on and go!

To keep this low-calorie, you want to stick to vegetables. But you may also want to sauté them a little before adding them here to make sure they get fully cooked. A great way to do this without adding a ton of fat is to sauté the veggies in chicken or vegetable broth. It works great! Avoid things like Pepperoni or salami. Processed meats are never healthy.

  • Mushrooms
  • Kalamata olives
  • Fresh basil, cilantro, or other fresh herbs.
  • Peppers – red peppers work great! You can do the spicy ones or the red bell peppers. Either will work fine here.
  • Onions – I love red onion on pizza!
  • Garlic
  • Red pepper flakes – For some spice.

Try Different Sauces

Look for sauces without any added sugars. You can try sauces like BBQ sauce or even hot sauce.

Alternate Cheeses

If you don’t mind the extra fat and calories, then regular cheese will be very tasty on this. Your cheese choice should, of course, complement your toppings. So choose carefully. Consider:

  • Cheddar cheese
  • Fresh mozzarella cheese
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Feta cheese

Play With Spices And Seasonings

You can always add more flavor by adding spices. I like to sprinkle some on the sauce and some over the cheese. Some spices to consider are:

  • Greek seasoning
  • Oregano
  • Curry powder
  • Taco seasoning

What About The Crust?

If pitas don’t do it for you, try naan bread. It’s a delicious alternative. There are also gluten-free pita bread options, but they are generally not as healthy. They usually have a ton of additives and processed ingredients. Whole wheat pita bread or naan are the best options. Plus, they are relatively easy to find in grocery stores.

Do I Have To Cook This In A Microwave?

No! You can bake this in an oven or toaster oven. Even an air fryer will work! There is no pizza dough to cook, so all you are doing is basically melting the cheese. But for the oven, you’ll want a pizza pan or a baking sheet, and it’s best to line it with parchment paper to keep the already-cooked pita bread from burning on the bottom.

Is Pizza Dough The Same As Pita Bread?

No. They are two different types of dough, although they are incredibly similar. But one is already made for you, like a slice of bread. The other generally needs to be baked first before you can add toppings. So pita bread has some definite advantages.

Is There A Way To Make Pita Bread Using Pizza Dough?

Yes! You can use pizza dough to make pita bread. Typically, pita bread is made in an oven or in a skillet. So all you have to do is follow the directions in a pita bread recipe using pizza dough.

About The Ingredients

Whole grain pita bread – Look for 100% whole wheat or whole grain with no sugar added.

Tomato sauce– Or sugar-free, jarred spaghetti or pizza sauce.

Fresh spinach – I use baby spinach leaves. They tend to work best.

Cottage cheese – You can use any kind you like as long as it’s not flavored or sweetened.

Oven Instructions

If you prefer to cook these in the oven, you can cook them at 450 F. for about 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is nice and gooey.

Storage

It’s doubtful that you’ll have leftovers, but if you do, Simply pack this in an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezing

Freezing is not recommended for this recipe. The cottage cheese won’t freeze well.

Reheating

You can reheat this in the microwave or the oven.
